This seat of Higher Education has emerged from the galaxy of institutions initially founded at Karaikudi by the great philanthropist, (late) Dr. RM. Alagappa Chettiar. It is located on a sprawling and ideally suited expanse of about 420 acres in the business town of Karaikudi in Sivaganga District in Tamil Nadu. Karaikudi is 400 Km South of Madras, in the Madras - Rameswaram line and is accessible from Thiruchirappalli and Madurai in about 2hrs. by road/rail. The University's motto is "Excellence in Action" and the University keeps before it the vision of excellence in all spheres of its action.
The University is of Unitary type with 16 full-fledged Departments,

ADMISSION PROCEDURE
Admissions are based on merit and subject to the Tamil Nadu Government's Examination Schedule Reservation policy.
EXAMINATION
The University follows Choice Based Credit System and Semester pattern of Examination with Continuous Internal Assessment; Generally the semester Examinations are held in Nov-Dec. and April-May.
RESEARCH
Top priority is given to Research and a number of scholars are pursuing research in various faculties under JRF, Part-Time and also Full-Time non- stipendiary schemes, 360 candidates have registered for Ph.D under different disciplines . Of this 89 have successfully completed their programme (as on Feb'99).
A number of research projects in identified thrust areas sponsored by various agencies like Department of Science and Technology (DST), Indian Council for Agricultural Research (I.C.A.R), All India Council for Technical Education, (A.I.C.T.E), Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (C.S.I.R) University Grants Commission (UGC) etc, to the tune of Rs. 4 crores are being undertaken by the faculty of the University Departments. A number of Regional, National and International Seminars , Symposia, Workshops etc. are organised by the Departments to benefit out of Interactions between experts and specialists in the respective areas of knowledge.

CENTRAL FACILITIES
The University has a well-equipped Central Library, a strong Computer Centre and an Instrumentation Centre to meet the requirements of staff and students of different Departments.
CENTRAL LIBRARY
The Library has a total collection of about 50000 volumes and subscribes to 175 journals both international and national. At a cost of Rs. 12.5 lakhs, the Central Library is being provided with a regular V-SAT facility for Internet Connectivity. This facility would facilitate access to the current and emerging trends in frontier areas of knowledge.
COMPUTER CENTRE
A Computer Centre, with 77 Stand Alone Machines and 31 Local Area Network Nodes, is offering a Diploma and P.G. Diploma course in Computer Applications under Distance Education.
CRYSTAL RESEARCH AND INSTRUMENTATION CENTRE
A Hi-tech Crystal Research and Instrumentation Centre was established in 1996.
CENTRE FOR WOMEN'S STUDIES
Impressed by the pioneering work done by our Centre for Women's Studies, the UGC has upgraded it as an Advanced Centre under phase II with a grant of Rs. 40 lakhs, Besides undertaking research and out-reach programmes for the upliftment of rural women, the Centre provides free legal aid to hapless women. This Centre serves as a Nodal Resource Agency to co-ordinate and monitor research programmes on women and women related issues.
CENTRE FOR ADULT CONTINUING EDUCATION LAND EXTENSION
The UGC has sanctioned a Centre for the implementation of Adult Continuing Education and Extension programmes.
The UGC has approved the Centre for Gandhian Studies during the Tenth Plan Period(4-10-2005). The Centre has started functioning from 10th December,2005. Dr.V.S.S.Kannan assume charge as Director from 27-1-2006. On 30th Jan,2006 the Martyr's Day was observed with mass prayer followed by Shramathan in the entire campus of the University for the first time in its history. From 27.3.2006 to 29.3.2006 a symposium on "Relevance of Gandhism in the New Era" was conducted. Nine Resource Persons in the field of Gandhism participated and presented in the various dimensions of Gandhism. 200 University Students and the members from the public are also continuously observed the programme for all the three days. A documentary film on "Gandhi" was screened to the participants on those three days. "Educating the Educators in Gandhism through EDUSAT" will be conducted soon in collaboration with the DTERT,Tamilnadu.
INFRASTRUCTURE
The Alagappa University has 420 acres of landed property. Some of the
major building- assets on the campus include an Administrative Building
(Rs.75 lakhs) and a Central Library building (Rs.50 lakhs). An Administrative
Building for the College of Physical Education at a cost of Rs. 26 lakhs
and a Science Block at a cost of Rs. 20 lakhs have been completed. A P
G Ladies Hostel (Rs.40 lakhs). M.B.A. building at a cost of Rs. 20 lakhs:
and an Academic Block at a cost of Rs. 20 lakhs have also been completed.
